Target’s execution is on point, which gives them a bright future

In case there is any confusion about Target's view about the future, last week their CEO threw a dart at Amazon on their earnings call.

“The future is based on omnichannel retail”

A few stats make this clear about how impressive Target’s recent execution is:

  • Q1 saw 140% digital order growth

  • 95% of orders picked and shipped on-time, higher than a year ago

  • Deliv technology was purchased to add sort centers to their local networks so that sorting orders don’t need to be done directly int he stores - it can be done further downstream (I think of it like the Zipcode model).

At this point, you would think Target’s 1,871 stores would be an anchor around its neck. Instead, they have turned it into an asset even at one of the worst times in history for physical retail.

Are you thinking differently about your infrastructure?
