Are you Trying to Thread the Needle in 2022?

I had an old friend ask me for an advice last week. After describing to me his goals, and a whole host of issues to address, his next statement really struck me:

"I am just not sure how I am going to thread the needle in 2022."

I stopped him immediately.

I told him "I much prefer the bulldozer approach."

To me, if you are trying to thread the needle, it means you are trying to do too many things at once. Let's say you are trying to do 4 things, and 1 of them ends up succeeding, but that 1 thing is not your top priority.

Is that a successful year? Almost certainly not.

However, now let's say you have only two top priorities, and you absolutely blow away your top priority in 2022.

To me, I think that is a fantastic year. That's what I mean by the bulldozer.

To me, threading the needle means you are not seriously considering your downside risk enough. What if it doesn't work, and what if you don't accomplish your top goals?

I would much rather train all my effort on my top 1 or 2 priorities, ensure those are my true top goals, and if I don't achieve them ....

well, at least I know I went after what I thought was my top goal with 100% of my effort, even if I ended up being wrong.
