What I'm Looking For From Shopify's 2023 Investor Day

Today at 11:30 AM Eastern, Shopify is having an investor day where it will update investors and analysts on the future growth areas for the company. It's been some time (by my recollection) since an event like this happened. Here are the major themes I'm expecting.

1 - An update or refresh to Shopify's mission. Entrepreneurs will be mentioned, but I expect the vision to be more expansive.

2 - Artificial Intelligence. How it will change business, and how it will change Shopify. Management is "all-in" on the impact of AI, so it will be interesting to see the directions.

3 - Enterprise. Shopify's progress on the mid-market and Enterprise segments, and where it's headed. It's possible they might reveal more details about how Shopify Plus and Commerce Components are related (or not), or even tease new components.

4 - Point of Sale/Retail. Shopify recently introduced a Retail-only edition. Where is Shopify as a retail software and service provider headed.

5 - Shop and Shop Pay. Expect to see updates and future topics related to one of the primary economic engines of Shopify.

6 - Pricing. There could be some high-level thoughts and guidance on pricing changes they are considering.

7 - Advertising. Retailers and brands continue to look for ways to reduce their cost to acquire and retain customers. Shopify has some experiments here, but there is more to do.

8 - B2B. I do expect to see a more expansive vision from Shopify in B2B.

9 - Entrepreneurs. You will not get out of a meeting with Shopify without speaking about entrepreneurs, even if it's not all they are focused on anymore.

10 - "Other". Who knows what else you could see here. Crypto? Some management team members continue to talk about the topic in public forums.

I do not expect to see 2024 financial guidance!

See you on the RMW Commerce Community during the investor day for some live blogging!
