Dick’s Sporting Goods to Buy Moosejaw from Walmart

Moosejaw, founded in Michigan in 1992, operates a highly successful e-commerce platform, has a loyal customer base, strong vendor relationships with leading outdoor brands and a passionate workforce. Moosejaw also operates brick-and-mortar locations in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan and Missouri.

If you’re wondering why Walmart ever owned another retailer like Moosejaw, it was part of the ill-fated Marc Lore era of eCommerce at Walmart.  Personally I am no fan of Marc Lore who is better at spotting a mark than building a sustainable business.  Walmart eCommerce under Marc Lore’s watch was characterized by throwing a lot of spaghetti on the wall and focusing attention to the importance of eCommerce, but very bad at producing any real results.

The good news is that the same fulfillment and technology leadership which Amazon learned from Walmart over many years, Walmart is now leveraging internally to build its fulfillment, ads, and technology platforms.

Moosejaw should be a much better fit for Dick’s.
