Mailchimp Is Slowly Moving Into Commerce

Mailchimp says two can play at that game as it inches closer to Shopify turf.

Big announcement for SMBs, as Mailchimp moves into the eCommerce platform market. A few notes:

  1. The pricing, 1.5-2% of sales based on the tier, indicates they are targeting the smallest of businesses who all of course need email, but are likely using a combination of #Shopify, WooCommerce / WordPress, and Squarespace primarily today.

  2. Obviously, there has been a high-profile spat between Shopify and Mailchimp in the last years which has pushed them in this direction.

  3. The mention of "Appointments" I thought was also a nod to Squarespace which acquired Acuity Scheduling 2 years ago - it's a recognition of the fact that the service industry needs Commerce as well - it's not just about products.

  4. I wouldn't be surprised in seeing Mailchimp acquire or offer a more robust content management system as well to complete the puzzle.
