The eCommerce Opportunity In The Construction Sector

In the next 5 years, few industries will undergo more changes than the construction industry. Yes, eCommerce and digitization are coming to suppliers, licensed specialists, general contractors in all pockets of this industry.

I think there are 3-4 massive opportunities buried in here and there are already startups firing up in several of these categories.

  1. DTC. Yes, there will be DTC brands in the construction industry. Born online for the digital era.

  2. Marketplaces. In any market where supply is fragmented or regionalized, there is unique supply. And where there is unique supply, there is often a multibillion-dollar marketplace opportunity buried in there.

  3. Commerce Platforms. These are the enabling tools for DTC brands. Some software platforms like Brokrete are combining 2 and 3.

  4. Payments and Financing. There are already startups advancing in the materials and services supplier financing space.

  5. Logistics. Need I say more.

One of the biggest opportunities in the next 5 years is in what have been traditionally niche and specialty eCommerce categories.

So many of these industry supply chains have not been digitized in the past due to archaic systems, lack of inventory information, and an older generation who worked on paper.
